Saint Mary's School
ABOUT US
St Mary’s School Limassol is 101 years old and is the oldest private school in our city.
In 1923, the Catholic Church decided to establish a school in a period when there were very few educational institutions in Limassol, which would be run by the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. This school is the only one that has a continuous presence in the life of our city since then.
Initially, the school was named Terra Santa, and was housed in a stone building with an internal courtyard, on Agios Andreou Street. The aim was to educate Cypriots who belonged to the Latin (Catholic) community. In the process, however, children who did not belong to this minority came and joined the school, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, but also children from other communities.
Over the years, the multiple increase in the number of students at the school and the preference shown by many families in Limassol resulted in the school needing more space, so in 1965 it moved to the building where it is housed to this day, near the Agios Nikolaos roundabout, on Georgios Grivas Digeni Street. After its move, the school was renamed St. Mary’s School, a name it retains to this day.
The building was designed by architect Stavros Economou and is one of the special examples of Cypriot modernism. The school was originally created as a girls’ school, but in 2000 it changed its form, although the kindergarten and primary school were always mixed. For several years, a boarding school operated at the school, which hosted students from neighboring towns and villages, as well as from abroad such as Africa, England, Greece, etc.
As for the educational aspect, the school offers a unique educational path over the years, which starts from kindergarten to the 7th year of secondary education. The institution is dedicated to providing a strong academic framework and cultivating social responsibility, starting its journey from kindergarten to Primary School and reaching the pinnacle of Secondary Education in the 7th Grade. Students receive consistent academic and social training for their future professional career or further education at an academic level.
The school is divided into two sections - Greek-speaking and English-speaking - in both Kindergarten and Primary. As for the Greek Primary School, it follows the educational curriculum of the Ministry of Education and Culture and is supplemented by the learning of English and French. The English Primary School delivers its lessons in English and teaches Greek and French at a second level as foreign languages.
Recognizing the importance of modern foreign languages in a diverse world, St Mary’s School emphasizes the acquisition of knowledge of four languages: English, Greek, French and Italian. This language learning is complemented by a comprehensive range of philological, commercial and science courses. This basic knowledge is cultivated within a supportive, disciplined environment that promotes critical thinking, decision-making and transmits the values of integrity, justice and respect.
St. Mary's School is a beacon of knowledge and personality formation in private education, and this is evident from its graduates over the years.

The primary and main goal of the School is to impart to students the necessary and essential knowledge to enable them to continue their tertiary education at universities worldwide, with the advantage of good to excellent knowledge of major European languages (Greek, English, French, Italian). Additionally, the School aims to provide them with the spiritual and moral values that will make them proper, useful, and well-rounded individuals in society.
Another primary goal of the School is to cultivate in students the concept of equality, regardless of origin, gender, age, or religion. Among other things, the right to education and the right to free expression are upheld, but in a way that does not offend the reputation and personality of others.
